We love visiting Mill River in the summer because the outdoor space is so beautiful, with hints of Europe, but it’s also great in the winter because the inside is super cozy.

Rowley is surrounded by gorgeous hiking and nature trails. My favorite trails right in Rowley are the BCT and Pingee Farm Road trail, which is 7.2 miles and is somewhere between intermediate and challenging (with gorgeous foliage in the fall), and the Bay Circuit Trail to Rowley, which is just over 12 miles and is perfect for mountain biking or birding since it’s intensely private.

Here are some of my personal favorite trails in the surrounding area that go through Rowley at some points.

Mill River Wildlife Management Area: Located in nearby Newbury and close to Rowley, this wildlife management area offers a network of trails that wind through marshes, forests, and along the scenic Mill River. It’s an excellent spot for birdwatching and observing local wildlife.

Parker River National Wildlife Refuge: Located in Newburyport, a short drive from Rowley, this expansive refuge features several miles of coastal trails that offer stunning views of sand dunes, salt marshes, and sandy beaches. It’s a prime spot for birdwatching, especially during migration seasons.

Bradley Palmer State Park: Situated in Topsfield, not far from Rowley, this state park features a variety of trails that meander through woodlands, fields, and along the Ipswich River. It’s a great place for picnicking and wildlife viewing.

Willowdale State Forest: Located in Topsfield, this state forest offers a network of multi-use trails, including hiking and mountain biking trails. The scenic paths wind through woodlands, wetlands, and along the Ipswich River.

The Rowley River is super small and almost feels like Outer Banks (the show) because it’s just so beautiful!

Launching your boat into the Rowley River is easily accessible, with boat ramps available in several locations along the river. As you set sail, you’ll be greeted by the idyllic landscape, featuring salt marshes, tidal flats, and lush greenery that line the riverbanks. The calm and gentle waters of the river create a peaceful atmosphere, perfect for a relaxing day on the water.

As you navigate the Rowley River, keep an eye out for the diverse wildlife that calls this area home. It’s common to spot various bird species, such as herons, egrets, and ospreys, as well as smaller critters like turtles and crabs along the shoreline.

This is the only brewery in Rowley MA, but other great breweries in the area include Riverwalk Brewing in Newburyport, Newburyport Brewing Company, Ipswich Ale Brewery in Ipswich, and True North Brewery in Ipswich.
